MELBOURNE, Nov 1 (Reuters) – Steve Smith will be happy to bat anywhere in the Australian order if called upon at the T20 World Cup and he might finally have his chance with injury doubts hanging over a number of his team mates.

Captain and opener Aaron Finch, number six Tim David and bonus gacor all-rounder Marcus Stoinis are all questionable ahead of Australia’s final Super 12 match against Afghanistan on Friday.

Though arguably Australia’s finest batsman of the modern era, Smith’s only on-field role has been as a substitute at this World Cup, with selectors opting for the hard-hitting but inexperienced David in the middle order.

Smith took two catches as a substitute fielder on Monday as Australia beat Ireland by 42 runs at the Gabba to keep their semi-final hopes alive.

While there are heavier hitters in the lineup, Smith feels his game could suit Australian wickets that were “doing quite a bit” in the tournament so far.

“You haven’t seen those really big scores. Guys like Virat (Kohli) in that game at the MCG just batted, and then took it on later on,” Smith told reporters of the India batsman’s match-winning knock against Pakistan.

“That is the way I like to go about things.

“If things are difficult early, I have played test cricket and one-day cricket so I have got the game to play in those difficult circumstances.

“The way the tournament has played out so far with the wickets, if you have got someone who is able to bat through a fair chunk of the innings and let the hitters go around them, that has worked pretty well.

“I certainly feel I can play that role.”

Wicketkeeper Matthew Wade is set to captain the side if Finch is ruled out, as he did when Finch left the field early during Ireland’s chase.

“I assume Wadey will take the reins, but I´m happy to help in any way I can,” said Smith.

“I´ve got a lot of experience, vice-captain of the test side and been captain before, so happy to help in any way I can.” (Reporting by Ian Ransom in Melbourne; Editing by Peter Rutherford)

Veteran television presenter Peter Purves today blasted Question of Sport as ‘unwatchable’ after the replaced its host Sue Barker with , saying the change was a ‘great shame’.

‘I mean I find the programme unwatchable now, and I think it’s a great shame. People get used to a certain thing and they like the style, and because people get older I don’t think they should just be dropped like that – maybe it should be their own decision.’

The Raiders believe the ‘s finals scheduling has ‘made it harder’ for them to beat the Storm in Melbourne next week, with Ricky Stuart complaining his team always draws ‘the short straw’.

On Sunday, the NRL confirmed the schedule for Week 1 of the finals, which begin on Friday night at BlueBet Stadium when reigning minor premiers Penrith host Parramatta as they look to move a step closer to a second Grand Final triumphs in a row.

The Raiders travel to Melbourne on Saturday night to take on the Storm at AAMI Park, an arrangement which has left the club unimpressed.

Canberra played on Sunday afternoon as they strolled to a 52-10 annihilation of the Tigers at Leichhardt Oval to clinch eighth place.

The Storm, however, will have an extra two days of rest after losing to Parramatta on Thursday night in the opening game of Round 25.

‘It’s made it harder for us and it reminds me of 2020 because it’s not easy, but we’re used to it,’ Raiders boss Don Furner told the .

Two years ago, the Storm and the Raiders faced each other in the preliminary final, with the game played at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane due to Covid-19 lockdowns in Victoria.

While the Storm had been based on the Sunshine Coast, the Raiders were denied permission to travel to travel to Queensland 24 hours before kick-off.Canberra were instead ordered to fly to Brisbane on the day of the game and head directly to Suncorp Stadium.

The less than ideal preparation saw the Raiders concede 22 unanswered points in the first 24 minutes, a deficit they never recovered as they lost 30-10.

‘I’m just happy to be in the semis,’ Stuart said after the win against the Tigers.’We are a club that’s very used to getting the short straw.

‘I thought we would play on Sunday and then when we had 24 hours less [until the game] I thought to myself I’d make a couple of changes.

‘Because we are playing on the Saturday that gave me the idea to rest a few players.’

The Raiders had reportedly asked the NRL for the finals to be the last one on the schedule, given they were the last team to confirm their finals slot and travelled back to Canberra from Sydney on Sunday night.

The NRL has instead scheduled as Saturday’s first game, to be followed by the qualifying final between Cronulla and the Cowboys at PointsBet Stadium.

A blockbuster Sydney rivalry ends Week 1 of the finals when the Sydney Roosters host the Rabbitohs at Allianz Stadium in a rematch of Round 25.

Despite the short turnaround, the Raiders head to Melbourne with plenty of optimism on the back of winning seven of their last eight games and four straight win in the last four meetings with the storm at AAMI Park.

2Day FM has cleared up speculation about the future of the Hughsey, Ed and Erin breakfast show.

Rumours swirled last week that the Hit Network’s national drive hosts Tommy Little and Carrie Bickmore would be taking over the Sydney breakfast slot in 2023 following Bickmore’s departure from Channel 10’s The Project.

However, Erin Molan shut down the gossip on Monday by confirming on LinkedIn she and her co-hosts Dave Hughes and Ed Kavalee aren’t going anywhere.

‘Completely unprompted,’ Molan began her post, presumably referring to the recent speculation surrounding her show.

‘Signed a new radio deal a couple of months back… love these legends… love our breakfast show listeners (the number of whom has almost doubled in a year) and feel very grateful to be part of Southern Cross Austereo,’ she added.

The show reached an all-time ratings low in 2021, but has been clawing its way back and hit its highest-ever listenership earlier this year.

Yet the program still remains at the bottom of the pack, trailing behind Nova’s Fitzy & Wippa and KIIS FM’s The Kyle and Jackie O Show.

It comes after well-placed sources denied reports Bickmore was being considered for 2Day FM’s breakfast show.
